Meet the Herd: David & Goliath
Small Stature, Big Personalities
Two of our most popular team members don’t wear uniforms—they wear fuzzy coats. Meet David and Goliath, our resident miniature horses and the undisputed stars of our Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) program.
While they may be small, their impact on our participants is monumental. Whether they are offering a soft nose to nudge a hand or simply standing by for a quiet moment of connection, David and Goliath have a unique way of making everyone they meet feel seen, special, and deeply loved.
Insider Intel: Life with David and Goliath
The staff who care for these two every day know that behind those cute faces lie some very "big" personalities. Here are a few fun facts about our favorite duo:
Professional Cookie Monsters: If there is a treat within a one-mile radius, David and Goliath will find it. They are highly motivated by snacks and aren't shy about asking for them!
Playful Pests: Like any father and son, they have their moments. David has a cheeky habit of nipping and pinching at Goliath’s legs whenever they’re being tacked up or getting ready to head out for the day.
The "Mud Bath" Enthusiasts: We pride ourselves on keeping our horses well-groomed, but David and Goliath have other plans. No matter how much we brush them, they head straight for the dirt the second they are turned out into the pasture.
Fast Facts: The World of Miniature Horses
What exactly makes "Minis" like David and Goliath so unique? While they might look like small ponies, they are actually bred to have the proportions and characteristics of a full-sized horse, just in a much smaller package. Here is what sets these pint-sized powerhouses apart:
Height Standards: To be officially registered, a miniature horse typically stands no taller than 34 to 38 inches at the withers (the ridge between the shoulder blades). This small stature makes them much more approachable for people who might be intimidated by a 1,000-pound animal.
Surprising Strength: Don't let the "cute" factor fool you—pound for pound, minis are incredibly strong. Historically, they were used in coal mines to pull heavy carts through tight tunnels where full-sized horses couldn't fit.
Longevity: Miniature horses are known for their hardy nature and impressive lifespans. It is very common for them to live well into their 30s, meaning they can provide decades of companionship and service.
Gentle Dispositions: Perhaps their most famous trait is their dog-like curiosity. Minis are known for being incredibly gentle and eager to please, which is exactly why David and Goliath are such natural fit for our Equine Assisted Learning sessions.
David and Goliath prove every day that you don’t need to be tall to have a giant heart. Their presence at Brush Run helps our participants build confidence, practice communication, and experience the pure joy of the human-animal bond. We are truly blessed to have them as part of our herd.
