Meet the Herd: Sonny

Our Equine Assisted Learning Specialist

Sonny is a standout member of the team at Brush Run Farm, where he currently serves in Equine Assisted Learning sessions. If there is one thing to know about Sonny, it’s that he truly loves people. Whether he is working in a session or simply greeting visitors, he thrives on human connection and considers any time spent with others to be a highlight of his day.

Currently, Sonny is working closely with one of his favorite volunteers, Anna, who is assisting with his ongoing training. A remarkably fast learner, Sonny is gaining skill and confidence every day. He finds great joy in their partnership and is always eager to please, showing a natural aptitude for the tasks they tackle together.

During the spring Sonny is in his element. He can often be found listening to the birdsong or watching the trees begin to bloom. While he enjoys the scenery, he is most excited for the return of lush green grass—his absolute favorite part of his favorite time of year.

The Haflinger Heritage

As a Haflinger, Sonny represents a breed world-renowned for being hardworking, intelligent, and gentle. These traits, combined with an excellent temperament, make Haflingers ideal candidates for therapeutic and educational programs.

Sonny also boasts the classic Palomino coloring—a striking golden-tan coat accented by a flowing white, cream, or silver mane and tail. This "golden horse" appearance is a hallmark of his breed, making him as handsome as he is kind.

What is Palomino Coloring?

Palomino is a genetic color coat in horses that consists of a gold or tan body with a white or silver mane and tail.

  • The Gold Standard: The ideal body color is often described as the shade of a "newly minted gold coin," though it can range from a light cream to a deep copper.

  • The Contrast: To be considered a true palomino, the mane and tail must be significantly lighter than the body, usually appearing flaxen, white, or ivory.

  • The Breed Connection: While palomino is a color and not a breed, certain breeds like the Haflinger are almost exclusively bred to exhibit this specific, stunning palette.
