Meet the Herd: Titus & Zane
Small Hooves, Big Mission
In 2022, the farm’s therapeutic mission received a massive boost in a small package with the arrival of Titus and Zane, two miniature Appaloosa horses. At home on Brush Run Farm, these two have become favorites of the Equine Assisted Learning Classes, proving that you don’t need to be a giant to make a monumental impact.
Why Miniature Appaloosas?
While any horse can be a companion, miniature Appaloosas like Titus and Zane possess a unique set of traits that make them world-class therapy animals.
The "Approachability" Factor
For many individuals with physical or behavioral health challenges, a 1,200-pound horse can be intimidating. Miniature horses typically stand under 38 inches tall—roughly the size of a large dog. This allows participants to meet them at eye level, fostering an immediate sense of safety and control.
The Appaloosa Temperament
Appaloosas are historically prized for their intelligence and even-keeled nature. In their miniature form, these traits are amplified. They are less likely to spook at sudden movements or noises, which is vital in a therapeutic setting. Also, they are socially intuitive.
Sensory & Aesthetic Engagement
The distinctive "spotted" coat of the Appaloosa—ranging from snowflake patterns to leopard spots—provides immediate visual and tactile stimulation. For children in sensory-focused programs, the contrast of their coats and the softness of their manes offer a grounding physical experience that aids in focus and emotional regulation.
